Arts Integration as an Approach to Teaching and Learning
In Anne Arundel County Public Schools, we encourage teachers to engage and motivate their students by connecting to content learning to the arts. This could include lessons that are taught
• about the arts (such as studying the art and life of Picasso),
• with the arts (such as using music to signal transition to another activity, drawing illustrations to accompany their writing, or as a way of learning the alphabet) or
• through the arts ( students use the elements of dance to dance the water cycle).
For the Arts Integration Schools, teaching through the arts (using an artistic medium for learning) is the mission and goal. The arts become the methodology and the process for learning. Lesson plans focus on both the arts and the content standards whenever they fit naturally. The standards are taught and assessed simultaneously and incorporate the academic language of both.
